District 10 Recap - October 19, 2018

POMA District 10 gathered on Friday, October 19, 2018, for their monthly event at the Blue Bell Inn, Blue Bell, PA. The group enjoyed a lecture about PSA Screening and Management of Clinically Localized Prostate Cancer by Dr. Marc Smaldone. Dr. Smaldone is a urologic oncologist from Fox Chase and he updated us on prostate cancer screening and treatment

Important points to remember:
*In 2017 an estimated 161,360 men were thought to be diagnosed with prostate cancer
*There was a decrease in prostate cancer mortality since the intro to PSA screening in the 1990’s
*The 5-year survival rate for localized prostate cancer is roughly 100%
*This year the USPSTF updated PSA screening from a Grade D to a Grade C recommendation
*The decision to undergo screening and should be made after an informed discussion
*Risks of repeat biopsy include: pelvic pain and urosepsis
*MRI is not currently covered by all insurance but is likely to be in the future, as it can be helpful in locating the area that needs to be biopsied
*Genomic testing exists in many forms but has varying accuracy

After Dr. Smaldone's presentation, Dr. George Vermeire (POMA immediate past president) updated us on POMA and the upcoming board meeting which will occur on November 3rd.
