The Best Travel Tip You Never Heard

Whenever my wife, Joyce, and I travel internationally, one of the first things I do is to check to see if there are any physicians in my specialty at our destination. Society membership directories, hospital websites, and even a simple internet search have opened doors I never expected. Nearly every time, colleagues have been remarkably gracious with their time, welcoming us into their practices and often sharing meals and local experiences.

These visits have been rewarding academically and personally. During recent travels, what began as collegial introductions unexpectedly led to invitations to lecture on my surgical experience to plastic surgeons in Uzbekistan and, on another occasion, to colleagues in Kenya. Those opportunities became highlights of our trips.

Connecting with fellow physicians offers a unique window into another culture, another healthcare system, and another way of practicing medicine. The friendships formed often last well beyond the journey itself.

As you plan your next trip, consider reaching out to colleagues wherever you are headed. It may become one of the most memorable parts of your travels.

Have a safe and enjoyable journey.
